Cleaning Function

• The primary job of the wiper blade is to scrape off residual toner from the OPC (Organic Photoconductor) drum after every print cycle. 

• This prevents ghosting (remnants of previous prints), background shading, and other print defects.

Material Construction

• Typically made of a rubber / polymer strip (often polyurethane) affixed to a metal frame.

• The rubber edge rides directly on the drum surface.

• The design balances enough pressure to clean the drum, but not so much that it damages the photoconductive coating. 

Durability & Wear

• Because of the friction between the wiper blade and the rotating OPC drum, the blade gradually wears down.

• Over time, a worn / deformed wiper blade can degrade print quality (e.g., smudges, streaks, or uneven toner removal). 

• In some remanufacturing or refilling contexts, the wiper blade is replaced more frequently than the drum.

Waste Toner Collection

• The toner scraped off by the wiper blade is typically guided to a waste hopper / waste toner chamber. 

• There is usually a recovery blade (mylar) behind the wiper blade that helps channel this wiped toner into the waste compartment. 

Print Quality Impact

• A well-functioning wiper blade helps maintain crisp text and clean backgrounds.

• If its edge is damaged or worn, you can get print defects like background fogging, stray toner specks, or “ghost” images.

Replacement Necessity

• For remanufactured cartridges or during refill cycles, replacing the wiper blade is very important to preserve the longevity of the OPC drum and maintain print quality.

• If over-pressurized or misaligned, the blade itself can damage the drum — so proper alignment is critical.
