Description & Function

The S-2101 (also referred to as SC23MB, or part number C13S210125) is a maintenance box / waste ink tank.
Purpose: It collects excess ink that is flushed out during printer maintenance cycles (like head cleaning) or purging, preventing that ink from leaking inside the printer.
It has a smart chip: The maintenance box comes with a chip (or “maintenance box chip”) so that the printer can detect the ink-absorption level / waste-ink status.
The absorbent material inside is typically a high-absorbency sponge / fiber cotton that soaks up the waste ink.
When the sponge is saturated (i.e., has absorbed its maximum capacity), the printer will detect “maintenance box full” (or equivalent) and prompt a replacement.
Once installed, this maintenance box is designed for one-time use: as per the printer manual, you should not reuse a removed maintenance box after a long time because the ink inside may have solidified or the absorption capacity reduced.
Handling precautions (from Epson’s user manual):
- Don’t touch the green chip on the maintenance box — it may affect detection.
- Avoid strong shocks / dropping the box.
- Don’t replace the maintenance box while printing (to avoid ink leaks).
- When disposing of a used box, seal it (to avoid ink leakage) before throwing away.
- Storage: avoid very high or freezing temperatures.
